About Me

Old Time Gardening is Good Enough For meme

This web page is dedicated to my Mother and Father and Grandfathers whom taught me what I call Traditional Organic Gardening as apposed to Contemporary Organic Gardening and Chemical Based Gardening Systems.

Over the past 50 years I have considered myself a purest when it comes to gardening. But after reading many pro and con posts on gardening forums and reading many technical reports/research papers I came to the conclusion that my gardening practices were not all that pure. I have read enough evidence to convince me that oceans are contaminated and by consequence kelp, seaweed and fish products are   contaminated. Farm animal manure is contaminated with growth hormones and medications, and biosolids are not tested for many contaminates.

Fortunately all my compost comes from my property with the exception of occasional addition of animal manure. In the future I plan on dropping the manure and sparingly add urea when the compost pile needs a boost to start heating. Who knows how my own vegetation may be contaminated form the atmosphere but it’s the best I can do. And I think my ancestors would approve of my planned change.

I am not recommending that anybody change there practices. If you are curious read the data and draw your own conclusions.

Hi John, I think your approach is very good for the planet as you are using what you produce to enrich your soil. I would be very proud doing that, if fact, I am aspiring to make compost from materials on my property. I do have a few chickens that provide manure and help with weed control.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Marlena
